Patrick Doran Director of Conservation for Michigan and The Great Lakes The Nature Conservancy Co-author "The Nature Conservancy and multiple partners are already working to attack many of these stressors in places like western Lake Erie, Green Bay and the coastal areas of Lake Ontario -- the very places where nature and people are inexorably linked.”

Professor David Siveter Department of Geology University of Leicester "The two ostracod specimens discovered represent a genus and species new to science, named Pauline avibella. The genus is named in honour of a special person and avibella means 'beautiful bird', so-named because of the fancied resemblance of a prominent feature of the shell to the wing of a bird. Ostracods are the most abundant fossil arthropods, occurring ubiquitously as bivalved shells in rocks of the last 490 million years, and are common in most water environments today.

David Allan Professor of Aquatic Sciences University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment Lead Researcher David Allan Professor of Aquatic Sciences University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment Lead Researcher "Despite clear societal dependence on the Great Lakes, their condition continues to be degraded by numerous environmental stressors. Current efforts to conserve, manage and restore the Great Lakes often take a piecemeal approach, targeting threats one by one," Allan said. "We need to recognize that the Great Lakes are affected by multiple environmental stressors, and devise strategies based on a full reckoning."Despite clear societal dependence on the Great Lakes, their condition continues to be degraded by numerous environmental stressors. Angel Yanagihara University of Hawaii "For over 60 years researchers have sought to understand the horrifying speed and potency of the venom of the Australian box jellyfish, arguably the most venomous animal in the world. We have found that a previously disregarded hemolysin can cause an avalanche of reactions in cells. This includes an almost instantaneous, massive release of potassium that can cause acute cardiovascular collapse and death."

Bruno Geddo UNHCR Representative Somalia "Twenty-three bodies have been recovered. The 32 remaining passengers are presumed to have drowned," the UNHCR said. Without doubt, the Gulf of Aden is now the deadliest route for people fleeing conflict, violence and human rights abuses in the Horn of Africa.”
