Wildlife officials in Maryland have put a bounty on the snakehead. The state will give out $200 gift cards for Bass Pro Shops as well as other prizes for catching and killing the fish, which is native to Africa and Asia but is believed to have made its way to America through Asian seafood merchants.

Don Cosden Director Maryland Department of Natural Resources Inland Fisheries “We do not want snakeheads in our waters," said "This initiative is a way to remind anglers that it is important to catch and remove this invasive species of fish.”Don Cosden

“We do not want snakeheads in our waters. This initiative is a way to remind anglers that it is important to catch and remove this invasive species of fish.”

The fish first came to notice in the state when an angler caught an 18-inch specimen in 2002. Since then, the population has grown and they've been caught in many waterways including the Potomac River and its tributaries. The so-called "fish from hell" also named "fishzilla" can survive up to four days on land as they crawl up to a quarter mile between bodies of water by wriggling on their fins from one waterway to another. They can grow to more than 2 feet long and have been found in at least seven states and are devastating the eco-systems of lakes, ponds and streams.

Joe Love Maryland Department of Natural Resources Tidal Bass Program Manager “We don’t expect that anglers will eradicate the snakehead population. We do believe this promotion and inspiration of anglers can help control the snakehead population. The information we gain from the Angler’s Log reports are also helpful in assessing the abundance, spread and impact of these feisty fish.”Joe Love

To enter the contest, anglers must catch, kill and then post a picture of themselves with a dead snakehead fish caught in Maryland on the DNR’s Angler’s Log webpage. Winners will be drawn on November 30, 2012. Last year, 69 anglers entered the contest, killing 82 of the creatures.

Kristin Karst Ama Waterways Executive Vice President and Co-Owner Template“We knew the AmaCerto needed a godmother befitting to the modern elegance of the beautiful ship. Christine Duffy’s long history in the industry and her love for cruising makes her the perfect fit. We are so pleased to know our beloved AmaCerto is under great guidance.”

Christine Duffy President Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) Template"I am honoured to serve as the godmother to the AmaCerto. Over the last five years, we have seen 10 percent annual passenger growth in this segment of the industry, as river cruises are among the most innovative and popular ways to discover a destination.”

Claudia Roller CEO Port of Hamburg Marketing Template“For the Port of Hamburg, the whole economic region and our worldwide customers and partners in shipping, trade, industry and logistics, this assent from Lower Saxony to the adjustment of the navigation channel is a very satisfactory decision. We are now looking to the speedy realization of this infrastructural measure and hoping that the first stages in construction can be commenced before the end of this year. That will only be feasible, however, provided that any possible objections do not lead to any further delay to the deepening of the navigation channel on the Lower and Outer Elbe.”

The Honourable Keith Hutchings Minister Responsible for RDC Template"This partnership further demonstrates Newfoundland and Labrador as a recognized leader on the international stage when it comes to research and development of technologies for ships and offshore structures operating in harsh environments. Worldwide, there is an industry need for this type of research and development. Our geography, academic environment and strong economy make Newfoundland and Labrador the best place for international companies to learn about operating in cold ocean environments."

Dr. Ellen K. Pikitch Institute for Ocean Conservation Science Stony Brook University Leader Lenfest Forage Fish Task Force "Traditionally we have been managing fisheries for forage species in a manner that cannot sustain the food webs, or some of the industries, they support. As three-fourths of marine ecosystems in our study have predators highly dependent on forage fish, it is economically and biologically imperative that we develop smarter management for these small but significant species."

Dr. P. Dee Boersma Professor and Director Centre for Penguins as Ocean Sentinels at the University of Washington Task Force Member "The Lenfest Forage Fish Task Force has provided guidance on how to prevent overfishing of these small prey species. Our hope is that fishery managers will put our recommendations into action to protect penguins, cod, whales, and a whole host of other creatures that need them to survive."

VENICE HASN'T STOPPED SINKING AFTER ALL Yehuda Bock Research Geodesist Scripps Institution of Oceanography UC San Diego Lead Author Template"Venice appears to be continuing to subside, at a rate of about 2 millimetres a year. It's a small effect, but it's important. Given that sea level is rising in the Venetian lagoon, also at 2 millimetres per year, the slight subsidence doubles the rate at which the heights of surrounding waters are increasing relative to the elevation of the city. In the next 20 years, if Venice and its immediate surroundings subsided steadily at the current rate, researchers would expect the land to sink up to 80 millimetres in that period of time, relative to the seaThe water flowing through Venice's famous canals laps at buildings a little higher every year. New measurements indicate that the historic city continues to slowly sink, and even to tilt slightly to the east…

The biggest scar on Budapest's history runs along the Danube. It was here, towards the end of World War II, that the fascist Arrow Cross Party (Nyilaskeresztes Párt) lined up the city’s remaining Jewish population. Thousands of men, women and children stood on the ledge above the water, shoes discarded, waiting to be shot. They say the river ran red for days.

MULTIPLE SPECIES OF SEACOWS ONCE COEXISTED Nicholas Pyenson Curator of Fossil Marine Mammals Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History Co-Author of the Research "The discovery that these multispecies seacow communities once existed revealed answers, but it also created new questions. Were these species competing against each other for seagrass resources, or were they avoiding competition by each species feeding in separate areas or on different grasses? Also, were seagrass beds structured differently in the past, or were they dominated by one seagrass species like we see today?"Sirenians, or seacows, are a group of marine mammals that include manatees and dugongs; today, only one species of seacow is found in each world region. Scientists discovered that this was not always the case...

SMALL DAMS ON MEKONG TRIBUTARIES A LOOMING CATASTROPHE FOR FISHERPEOPLE

"Planned dams in Southeast Asia would affect fish productivity and biodiversity in the world's largest inland fishery. You can get the same energy production with very different environmental impact, depending on which dams you build. The revenue will come to Laos, by exporting energy to Thailand and Vietnam and the fish will be lost in the floodplains of Cambodia and Vietnam, but mainly in Cambodia. The loss of fish translates to a big impact on food security of a very poor population.Stanford computer models show that small dams on Mekong River tributaries could have catastrophic impact on fish and people...
