I would like to thank the many champions, citizens, voluntary organizations, public bodies, and governments that have helped promote the New7Wonders of Nature campaign over the past four years, starting with over 440 locations from over 220 countries and all the way to the 28 finalist candidates from whom the New7Wonders of Nature have been chosen. We congratulate each of these participants for achieving r provisional New7Wonders of Nature status, and look forward to completing the confirmation process to celebrate each one in his own official inauguration ceremony early in 2012. When the New7 Wonders of Nature are confirmed, they will join the man-made New 7 Wonders of the World in becoming part of global memory for humankind forever. The results will still be checked, validated, and independently verified. Once the voting validation process is completed, in early 2012, New7Wonders will then work with the confirmed winners to organize the official inauguration events. It may happen that one or more of the provisional winners announced today will not be confirmed during the validation process, New7Wonders will issue a media update should this happen.”

John Sauven Executive Director Greenpeace "Just over three decades ago the first Rainbow Warrior was launched from the River Thames. The new Rainbow Warrior will be vital in supporting the millions of people around the world committed to environmental protection and social justice.” Bernard Weber Founder and President New Seven Wonders of Nature “I would like to thank the many champions, citizens, voluntary organizations, public bodies, and governments that have helped promote the New7Wonders of Nature campaign over the past four years, starting with over 440 locations from over 220 countries and all the way to the 28 finalist candidates from whom the New7Wonders of Nature have been chosen. Terri McCulloch of the Bay of Fundy Tourism partnership who campaigned for four years to have the Bay of Fundy declared a natural wonder of the world says even though her bid didn't succeed, the quest has attracted global attention to the unique body of water. Bob Manglitz President and Chief Executive Lake Michigan Car Ferry Service "This designation could play a critical role in the survival of this one-of-a-kind historical asset. The ship's historic propulsion system is under threat by the EPA. Converting the ship from coal to oil would destroy part of the historic coal-delivery system and significantly increase operating costs. Adding diesel engines would leave the historic machinery intact but unused." Kofi Vondolia Doctoral Thesis University of Gothenburg "Allowing technically advanced fishing fleets to fish offshore within Ghana's economic zone means that inshore fish stocks, which are accessible to the country's own, small-scale fishing fleets, are also dwindling. If the government in a coastal developing country holds reliable data on the factors relevant to fishing taxation, they can use our bioeconomic model to set an optimum taxation level for foreign ships undertaking offshore fishing within the economic zone of that country," says Kofi Vondolia. The fees foreign trawlers pay for offshore fishing at present are very low in comparison to our calculations. It is unlikely that the current level of charges lead to the highest possible welfare for the countries with fishing zones in which foreign vessels are fishing.” Eric Parmentier University of Liège Belgium "You just have to pick them up and they make sounds. We both visited the hospital because we were bitten and Sandie's finger was nearly cut in half. At first we thought there was only one sound, but then it became apparent that the piranhas produce two more: a short percussive drum-like sound when fighting for food and circling an opponent; and a softer 'croaking' sound produced by their jaws when they snap at each other. It is difficult for the fish to reproduce in the tank, so I am sure we have to deploy hydrophones in the field to have the sounds that are produced during mating."

The famous Thai water festival of Loy Krathong will go ahead despite the flooding in many parts of Thailand. The centuries old festival is held on the night of a full moon at the end of the rainy season. Loy Krathong is held to placate Phra Mae Khongkha, the country's goddess of water. Hundreds of thousands of little candlelit boats and rafts are launched in a hope that they carry misfortune and past sins away.

Professor Locke Rowe Chair Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) "How prey respond to the fear of being eaten is an important topic in ecology, and we've learned a great deal about how these responses affect predator and prey interactions. As we learn more about how animals respond to stressful conditions -- whether it's the presence of predators or stresses from other natural or human-caused disruptions -- we increasingly find that stress brings a greater risk of death, presumably from things such as infections that normally wouldn't kill them. What we found was unexpected -- more of the dragonflies died when predators shared their habitat. We allowed the juvenile dragonflies to go through metamorphosis to become adult dragonflies, and found those that had grown up around predators were more likely to fail to complete metamorphosis successfully, more often dying in the process."
Michael Spindelegger Foreign Minister Austria “A good use of the Danube as an environmental-friendly navigable waterway needs improvements in ports. An important aspect is the management of the waste generated by navigation. We will need sustained efforts for the long run. It is important for us to use the future preparations for the next financial framework of the European Union to increase the implementation of the Danube Strategy. “
David M. Lampton Director of the China studies program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland "The Chinese military’s goodwill missions may cause Washington anxiety in the future. China’s navy and soon air force will be moving further and further into the global commons, which has traditionally been dominated by the U.S. It’s trying to use military powers in ways that are reassuring and not threatening. The Chinese have a strategy of simultaneously growing their hard power but using it in a soft way that’s reassuring and therefore doesn’t build a coalition of enemies against it.”
