Thousands of sailors aboard naval ships from around the world are gathered in Boston to mark the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner and the War of 1812. Boston has a crucial maritime and colonial heritage and figures large in the 4 July celebrations for the anniversary of America’s independence. Boston had the famous tea party incident. The War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the first edition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

At least 18 naval ships from around the world including Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Indonesia, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Canada and England are in Boston as part of Operation Sail, or OpSail 2012. The vessels have brought 10,000 to 12,000 sailors to the Boston Navy Week’s War of 1812 bicentennial celebrations. U.S. warship, USS Constitution also called Old Ironsides was central to the celebrations. In 1812 it outgunned and won against British naval forces. The ship’s ship-to-ship victories against what was then the world’s most dominant naval force rallied Americans around their troops and country. The Constitution sailed on its annual July 4th three-hour turnaround cruise.

The celebration is a tribute to all US sailors and marines who fought gallantly in the War of 1812 or who have fought in other conflicts since then and includes members of the Coast Guard whose crew participated in the War of 1812, including the first-known prisoners of war in Coast Guard history.

Press Release DAY OF THE SEAFARER 25 June of each year is the "Day of the Seafarer", recognizing the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families... HEALTH CHECK FOR EUROPEAN STREAMS In a unique field experiment, ten research groups from nine different countries have studied the ecological status of 100 streams across Europe. This was the first study to make extensive use of leaf-litter breakdown as an assessment method. The findings of the study -- in which Eawag played a key role -- are reported in the latest issue of Science. DEMOLISHING THE DAMS ON THE ELWHA RIVER The Elwha River dam on the Elwha River in America has finally been demolished and removed after 100 years. The Elwha dam was built in 1913 in what is now the Olympic National Park to provide power for large parts of the US state of Washington... Military body armour and vehicle and aircraft frames could be transformed by incorporating the unique structure of the club-like arm of a crustacean that looks like an armoured caterpillar, according to findings by a team of researchers at the University of California, Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering and elsewhere published online June 7, in the journal Science.

Dr. John Long (who was not involved in the study) Natural History Museum of LA County Expert in Fossil Fishes "This is a profound discovery which clearly shows that intermediate fossil forms, which according to certain creationist theories shouldn't exist, are regularly turning up as scientists keep looking for them."

Tomas Guardia Director-General for international Organisations Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Panama's commissioner to the IWC “The changes were stimulated both by economic factors and a burgeoning environmental awareness. The New York Times selected Panama as their number one tourist destination for 2012; so when you add on an additional activity such as whale-watching, it all helps to promote Panama outside the country. Also, many Panamanians were previously not aware of the resource we have close to our city, and in fact one of the reasons for hosting the IWC was to raise awareness of our marine environment."

Maj. Gen. Michael J. Walsh USACE Deputy Commanding General Civil Works and Emergency Operations Template"Post-Panamax vessels today make up 16 percent of the world's container fleet, but account for 45 percent of the fleet's capacity. Those numbers are projected to grow significantly over the next 20 years. The United States is a maritime nation. This report provides to Congress and the public an analysis of the challenges and opportunities presented by the post-Panamax vessels, and outlines options on how the nation might address the port and inland waterway infrastructure needs required to accommodate these new vessels.”

Dr Maurizio Porfiri Corresponding Author "These findings provide practical evidence that a species' preference for conspecifics may be used to inspire the design of robots which can actively engage their source of inspiration. New studies are currently underway in our lab investigating the interactions between fish and robotic fish when they are free to swim together under controlled and ecologically complex conditions."

“The existing measures are no longer adequate for assessing an ecosystem as a whole. Just as a patient can be ill without having a temperature, rivers and streams with clean water can still have a lot of other problems as ecosystems. Also crucial to ecosystem health is the functioning of processes which are characteristic of natural systems -- an aspect which has been neglected to date in the assessment of surface waters. Litter input is the main source for stream food webs and is of major importance for whole-system metabolism. Just 'taking the patient's temperature' is certainly no longer a reliable way of checking the health of streams and rivers in Europe. Modern assessment of freshwater ecosystems calls for the kind of differential diagnosis which we take for granted in medicine -- identifying the underlying causes of symptoms on the basis of additional criteria. Here, processes such as litter breakdown can make an important contribution."

COSTA CONCORDIA CAPTAIN SAYS 'DIVINE HAND' GUIDED HIM

Captain Francesco Schettino Letter to Lawyers Template"If I had continued on that path the ship's prow would have hit the rock. It would have been carnage. A divine hand surely touched my head. There are those who say the impact with the stern was caused because I was suffering from a hallucination. What hallucination! It was rather my instinct, my skills, the ability to know the sea and suddenly change direction.Captain Francesco Schettino of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which ran aground off an Italian island with the loss of 32 lives six months ago, claimed that the disaster would have been much worse had a "divine hand" not guided him...

UNDERWORLD DOGGERLAND UNCOVERED IN NORTH SEA

Dr Bates Geophysicist Department of Earth Sciences St Andrews “Doggerland was the real heartland of Europe until sea levels rose to give us the UK coastline of today. We have speculated for years on the lost land’s existence from bones dredged by fishermen all over the North Sea, but it’s only since working with oil companies in the last few years that we have been able to re-create what this lost land looked like. When the data was first being processed, I thought it unlikely to give us any useful information, however as more area was covered it revealed a vast and complex landscape. We have now been able to model its flora and fauna, build up a picture of the ancient people that lived there and begin to understand some of the dramatic events that subsequently changed the land, including the sea rising and a devastating tsunami.A huge area of land which disappeared into the North Sea UK many thousand years ago has been recreated and put on display in London by scientists. Known as Doggerland, the land mass is thought to have tens of thousands of human inhabitants before it sunk...

SA CAMPAIGNS TO ATTRACT SHIPS TO ITS REGISTRY

Samuel Nkosi Executive Head of Policy (Regulatory Affairs and Ship Registrar) South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) “This is really a sad situation, which cannot be allowed to go on . . . On the continent we have Angola, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Sudan [and] all these countries have their own ships which are registered in their ship registers. Even land-locked Ethiopia has 13 ships on its register. Loyalty to South Africa should also be a consideration for local ship owners when choosing a registry. We are not saying that the companies that own ships should not make money . . . but at the end of the day they also have to show some patriotism. An enabling environment is required to attract ships to a country’s ship register. Current South African Ship Registration Act in itself is unable to make the ship register attractive and competitive.Despite South Africa having the biggest economy on the African continent and conducting 98% of its trade by sea, the country did not have a single commercial shipping vessel on its ship registry. The registry is one of the oldest in Africa, having been established in 1940...

PANAMA CANAL TRAFFIC PROTECTION FOR WHALES

Hector Guzman Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute "We recorded 98 interactions between whales and ships during an 11-day period. Just over half of the whales had encounters; one particular whale had 45 encounters in just four days. You can imagine; you have these small artisanal fishing boats and these huge vessels - it's just chaos, the way they come in and out of the country. So under the new scheme they'll be apart from the heavy traffic lanes - more important still is we're increasing the buffer of protection between the mainland and the shipping lanes in a region where we have five different protected areas including World Heritage Sites."Panamanian officials and scientists have developed a plan to channel vessels using the Panama Canal into narrower lanes in order to avoid ships colliding with and killing whales. They plan to present it for discussion and maybe adoption by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) next year...

NANOSCOPIC LOOK AT AN ESTUARY'S GREEN ALGAE
Aitor Alonso Biologist "They have been used for producing biofuels, for treating sewage, etc. Research has also been done on them in the quest for products for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. But the practical applications of the green algae were not the starting point of this research, rather their extremely high relative presence among the smallest organisms in the Nervión estuary. There is an abundance of them among the smallest algae in the plankton, in other words, picoplankton. Most of what can be found of that size, apart from bacteria, are green algae. We knew the green algae were a significant group, but not which species it actually consisted of.”The pico is a very small unit, even smaller than the nano as it is the equivalent of 10-12. The biologist Aitor Alonso has devoted himself to studying green algae of this imperceptible size in the Bilbao estuary, paying particular attention to the area beyond the Nervión estuary...

MYSTERY OF THE FLATFISH HEAD SOLVED

Dr Matt Friedman Oxford University Researcher Template"This fossil comes from Bolca in northern Italy, a site that has literally been mined for hundreds of years for its fossil fishes. This remarkable site provides a snapshot of an early coral reef assemblage. Reefs are well known as biodiversity hotspots, so it is perhaps not surprising that Bolca provides us with the first evidence of many modern fish groups. Those delicious flatfishes, like halibut and sole, are also evolutionary puzzles. Their profoundly asymmetrical heads have one of the most unusual body plans among all backboned animals (vertebrates) but the evolution of their bizarre anatomy has long been a mystery...
